Currently, more than 840 million people go hungry every day, particularly in Africa where one in four persons is forced to find daily sustenance. According to UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP executive director Achim Steiner, he stated at the recent Save Food Congress in Germany that the world produces more food than is actually needed. Almost 1.3 billion tonnes of food is lost annually along the supply chain or wasted due to poor consumption decisions (sadly, emerging markets don't perform much better than developed counterparts when it comes to food that ends up in landfill instead of on plates).
