n South African Food Review - Happy 50th birthday SAAFoST!

Abstract

In 1960 food science was still in its infancy, yet an inspired and dedicated group of South African food professionals realised the need for a scientific organisation to coordinate the efforts of academia and industry to supply adequate and safe food in our country. From the beginning, SAAFoST was not an elitist scientific club but a cooperation between scientists, government and commerce. During the last 50 years the role of SAAFoST has evolved as the scope of food science has expanded to encompass many diverse scientific disciplines from nanotechnology to genetics. Moving forward I believe that SAAFoST's role will gain further importance as the food industry tackles the immense challenge of food security and sustainability of supply.
