In April 2008, Tiger Brands partnered with UK-based Symphony Environmental to introduce biodegradable packaging to its flagship brand, Albany breads. It caused an uproar among members of the South African Plastics Recylcing Organisation (SAPRO) who consider the inclusion of biodegradable additives into products that are extensively recycled to be a major threat to the industry. The Advertising Standards Authority of SA (ASA) subsequently ruled that Tiger Brand's claim that its Albany bread product's biodegradable bag packaging was unsubstantiated and misleading to consumers - and it was asked to withdraw the claim with immediate effect. At the time of going to press, this ruling had just been overturned.
