Abstract

SAAFoST acquired international status when it became a founding member of IUFoST in 1970. Over the years the association has grown its international network primarily by the participation of prominent international food scientists as keynote speakers at SAAFoST Biennial Congresses and more recently by greater participation at international conferences. Aubrey Parsons, a previous SAAFoST president, was the first South African representative to serve on the IUFoST Governing Council. He was also instrumental in encouraging SAAFoST to bid for the honour of hosting the 15th IUFoST World Congress of Food Science and Technology. This procedure can be likened to bidding to host the Olympic games!
