The first draft sequences of the wheat genome have been released by a team of British researchers in a major scientific breakthrough for food production in Africa. The analysis of 95% of all wheat genes - just the first step in a process that could take several years to fully complete - will speed up the process of developing disease-resistant crops, resulting in greater food security, more efficiency and potentially lower prices.
