According to the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), global food prices rose by 1.4 per cent in September as a result of the drought in the US. At present, the SA maize price is over 44 per cent higher in the first seven months of 2012 compared with 2011. 'The poorest of South African consumers will be the hardest hit, because they spend 40 per cent of their income on food,' comments economist Mike Schussler.
