According to Statistician-General Pali Helohla, South Africa's economy is in a 'difficult' situation with weak growth, high unemployment, poor job creation and rising inflation. And, if that's not enough of a wake-up call, the report that Nigeria has overtaken South Africa as the biggest economy on the continent is certain to set the cat among the pigeons. A recent rebasing exercise, undertaken by Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics, shows the country's economy is about 60 per cent larger than ours, according to various media sources. Worryingly, economists warn this may mean investors now look for opportunities in Nigeria, potentially at the cost of other countries, including South Africa.
