Abstract

10 years ago, the use of peptides in treatment skin care products was a thing of the future. Today these unique, biomimetic molecules arguably represent one of the most powerful weapons in the formulator's armoury in the battle against actinic skin ageing. Recent advances in bio-engineering have made it possible to produce ever more sophisticated peptide molecules, all of which are fabricated by the specific sequencing of any of the 20 amino acids found in nature. These amino acid sequences, which are effectively short chain proteins, naturally occur in the skin and act mostly as messengers that signal the biochemical transformations responsible for the generation of new skin cells.
