In acne sufferers, increased sebum production is stimulated by the androgen hormone 5dihydrotestosterone (5-DHT) often enhanced during puberty. It has been proven that an increase in this hormone will increase the proliferation of the sebaceous gland. An increase in the sloughing of keratinocytes as well as the increased sebum can cause the hair follicle and the sebaceous gland to plug.
