They are viewed as expensive to purchase and maintain, due to the need for specialised labour, expensive spare parts and often having to return the pump to service centres or to the manufacturer directly. In cases of repair, it was often cheaper to simply buy a new pump. In boreholes, the limited diameter and high heads required have made multistage submersibles the pump of choice.
