Extracted from text ... 30 - IMIESA OCTOBER 2006 None of South Africa's 248 municipalities nor any of the six metropolitan councils have yet followed the international lead in prohibiting the use of carcinogenic and environmentally hazardous coal tar products in their road construction projects. Noting this shortcoming Piet Myburgh, chief executive officer of the Southern African Bitumen Association (Sabita), points out that only the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL), the Provincial Council Western Cape and the Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works have heeded the call to ban coal tar products on their infrastructure projects.
