The head of the Construction Sector Education and Training Authority (CETA) has proposed an emergency intervention to help plug the skills gap that is undermining the government's multibillion rand infrastructure building programme. "There is a vast pool of knowledge and expertise among retired artisans, which could be tapped to help train learners in industry skills, such as, bricklaying, carpentry, plastering and construction contracting, " says CETA chief executive, Teboho Thejane.
