In 2005, Spoornet (now known as Transnet Freight Rail) lost R21-million because of an ageing train fleet and a general lack of customer orientation. An urgent recovery plan needed to be put in place. With the approach of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup there has been an inevitable increase in trade, in both exports and imports. Prior to the beginning of 2006, South Africa's railway operator, the then Spoornet, was severely underperforming thus placing massive strain on road networks and the trucking industry.
