Abstract

In 2006, the Zambian government initiated an extensive programme to construct a number of bridges at numerous locations across the country. The various locations that were selected to build the bridges would result in the opening up of rural areas, which had previously been totally inaccessible by road. The programme was directed by the Road Development Agency (RDA). The RDA tendered the projects as turnkey 'design and construct' projects with three bridges included in each tender package. UWP Consulting, together with a local contractor, tendered two of the packages. The outcome of this was that UWP was handed the tender for the package involving the construction of three bridges in the Northern Province of the country. One of the bridges would connect the Chilubi and Nsumbu islands, which are situated south-east of Lake Bangweulu.
