South Africa, like many developing countries, faces significant challenges in the sustainable provision of adequate and safe water services. Despite considerable success in addressing water services backlogs throughout South Africa, many municipalities continue to have inadequate water treatment and associated water quality management practises in place; both effects the provision of safe drinking water and the controlled discharge to environment of treated effluent. In order to assist in the attainment of the national goal of the provision of safe drinking water across South Africa, in April 2006 the national Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF) initiated a challenging two-year pioneering project for the national deployment of an electronic water quality management system (eWQMS) to all 166 municipal water services authorities (WSAs) in South Africa.
