More than 15 000 people are killed and more than 40 000 people are seriously injured in road accidents in South Africa annually. This is costing the country about R40-billion per annum, which does not take into account the loss of valuable skills and labour. Notwithstanding some welcoming improvements over the 2007 festive season, there is clearly a major need for an enhanced approach to address our huge problem of unsafe roads.
