The classical definition of innovation is to introduce a new idea or method, or to improve on that which already exists. However, existing road surfacing methods do not appear to be innovation friendly. But, with the increase in unemployment worldwide, the creation of labour intensive road construction has become a priority.
A new, world-class centre devoted to the study of African cities was formally launched by the University of Cape Town (UCT) this week. The centre will start to grapple with the enormous changes that are affecting virtually every city on the continent and beyond, according to director Edgar Pieterse.
