Just a short trip away, approximately 150km east of Johannesburg, is the strategic town of Secunda. It is not strategic because it is the heart and administrative capital of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, but rather it is the petrochemical capital of South Africa, with its SASOL II and SASOL III complexes. By design, the Govan Mbeki Municipality has the largest underground coal mining complex in the world. Over and above this, the municipality boasts a number of significant gold mines, and has 75% of Eskom's base-load power stations situated within its borders. Perhaps the word strategic is an understatement.
