Abstract

The Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), in their recently-released State of the Nation Report, has sounded the alarm about the spread of a toxic organism, cyanobacteria, in our dams and rivers. These bacteria are harmful to both humans and animals. As the organisation points out, eleven percent of South Africa's major dams have 'significant to severe' problems. And many, if not most, of South Africa's rivers and reservoirs are infected.
