The construction phase of a multi-million rand salinity control weir for QIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM), an 80% subsidiary of Rio Tinto, was recently completed. The project, awarded to South Africa's SSI, included a water resources study for the mine, the design of a salinity control weir and the supervision of its construction, bulk water supply and wastewater treatment design for the mine and its residential villages, a landfill design and the preparation of a water management plan as well as a storm water management plan for a quarry.
