Transportation , power, water, housing, information and communication technology are just some of the burning issues being addressed by the City of Johannesburg as it spearheads the Gauteng Provincial Government's macro and micro-economic growth strategies. The key emphasis is on service and delivery. South Africa's evolving public sector blueprint is a vital one, since National Treasury's ability to help fund these and other initiatives has a direct impact on local and international confidence at a time when the global economy is still climbing out of the 2008 slump. In future, South Africa will have to compete far more assertively against other emerging markets for direct foreign investment and funding. On an upbeat note, South Africa's recent BBB and BBB ratings for long-term foreign and local currency debt was reaffirmed by Fitch Ratings in June 2016, following a worse than expected Q1 decline in the country's GDP outlook to around 1.2% (annualised).
