Abstract

In this study, I intend to conceptualize as a basis of social capital in a West African farming community on the Ghana side of the Ghana-Togo border area. I will show that, by functioning as an environment of trust, served as indigenous social capital that particularly facilitated binary relationships between the people in this community. I will also show that as time went by and the mutual benefits, which sustained these relationships steadily dissipated, came under stress. Constituting an integral part of the indigenous institutional environment that coordinated land transaction between the host community and migrant land users, the breakdown in the mediatory capacity of thus raises the question of institutional revitalization in the area, to which a reform of the land tenure system is central.
