Abstract

Dr. John Bendor-Samuel, who died tragically on January 6, 2011, as the result of a car accident near his home in High Wycombe, U.K., initiated the work of the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Africa in 1961, and came to stay in Ghana in 1962. He was Africa Area Director of SIL during the 1970s, by which time he was living in Nigeria, and later became Executive Vice-President of SIL International. In 1980 the Ghanaian branch of SIL was incorporated in Ghana, with Ghanaian leadership, as the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy and Bible Translation (GILLBT).
