oa South African Journal of Information Management - Digital divide in Australia : where the real invisibility lies

Abstract

The 'digital divide' is an issue occupying more and more space in scholarly studies, especially in the fields of economics, sociology, business and information studies. The importance stems from the fact that for the past two decades the world is perceived as having entered a new form of economic activity - the so called 'information economy'. The effect of the 'digital divide' on segments of the Australian population that are already disadvantaged is discussed, showing that the digital divide is not a new way of alienation, but just another layer added to an already existing divide: the visible elite and the invisible Web of the dispossessed and now uninformed masses.
