oa South African Journal of Information Management - Relating Kenyan manufacturing SMEs' finance needs to information on alternative sources of finance

Abstract

The growth and competitiveness of small to medium enterprises (SMEs) are compromised by the constraints on their access to finance, among other systematic and institutional problems. As a result, a finance gap exists. This article presents empirical evidence on SMEs' awareness of alternative sources of finance and the current situation in their use. The results of the empirical survey reveal that the majority of the SME operators were ignorant of existing financing sources. They lacked information on alternative sources of finance. Suggestions are made to reduce the ambiguity in the use of alternative financing sources. These include the setting up of an SME portal and a centralized finance data bank.
