oa South African Journal of Information Management - Investigating the administrative professional's information management role in a networked enterprise

 

Abstract

The Internet and World-Wide Web (WWW), instigating a large array of further developments such as the socalled digital economy, has changed business practices to such an extent that multiple research projects have been launched recently with regard to the latest development within the digital office. One such area refers to the increasing challenges and opportunities offered by the Internet and WWW as far as the responsibilities of the administrative professional are concerned. More specifically, it has become necessary to establish the administrative professional's role in the processing, retrieval, dissemination and repackaging of digital information in a modern enterprise, and to determine how a person from this career group can add value to the decision-making processes, thus enhancing its competitive position in industry. In this article a brief overview of the profile of the administrative professional in the organization is discussed. The digital environment was also evaluated. It was found that, owing to rapid changes in this environment, employers' key expectations of their administrative staff were also changing. Research conducted indicated that employers expect administrative professionals to be skilled in new and emerging technologies and to show a high degree of information management skills. New information management skills were evaluated within the framework of information systems available in the networked enterprise. ICT has become the major launching pad of business activities in the world and causes fundamental shifts in the management structure and operations procedures. In the light of these changes, this article descriptionbes an effort to empirically justify the specific skills and abilities of the contemporary administrative professional. The importance of the administrative professional's ability to provide the correct information in a context that aids decision-making was examined. The level of awareness of emerging information and communications technology tools and techniques that is regarded as necessary by the manager was evaluated via a series of interviews with a selected number of enterprises.
