Abstract

Greeting, Grave Gentles; thank you for your welcome. I must confess I am extremely nervous at having to address such an august body: the word stands for the vibrant and intractable language I love to distraction, and the word is, to me, redolent of erudition - a quality I admire, which reduces me to hopeless envy. So I do not feel at all adequate to this evening's task: the Seventh English Academy Lecture, no less.
