Abstract

Roslyn Knutson examines the commercial relations between the theatre companies in Shakespeare's London. This entails a detailed survey of the interpretations of these relationships by many scholars, theatre historians, in what is known as the War of the Theatres. This traditional account of the quarrels between dramatists focuses on their animosity as that which determined the commercial policies of the London theatres.
