oa Focus on Arms in Africa - Firearms and crime in Kenya

Abstract

Kenya's strategic location at the crossroads of conflict in East Africa and the Horn has made it a highway for small arms trafficking and proliferation. The capital city of Nairobi is relatively removed from the thousand kilometres of unpoliced border with Somalia as well as the borders of Ethiopia, Sudan, and Uganda. Nonetheless, a survey of the city's public published recently by the Institute for Security Studies reveals the way security and stability are threatened by a perceived increase in the presence of firearms and related crime.
