The United Nations Office onDrug and Crime (UNODC)announced the imminententry into force of the UnitedNations Protocol against the IllicitManufacturing of and Traffickingin Firearms, Their Parts andComponents and Ammunition (UNFirearms Protocol), after Zambiabecame the fortieth country toratify it in April 2005. The Protocol,which supplements the UnitedNations Convention againstTransnational Organised Crime,provides an important opportunityfor countries to control one of thebiggest killers of our times, smallarms. Zambia, through KalomboThomson Mwansa, Minister ofHome Affairs for Zambia,deposited the instrument ofratification during the 11th UnitedNations Congress on CrimePrevention and Criminal Justice inBangkok, 18-25 April.
