Abstract

Simulation of lifting procedures and the quantification of lifting capacity are important tools in the rehabilitation of patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). This review discusses the lifting capacity of patients with CLBP on standardized multiprofessional therapy programs. In comparison to healthy subjects, the lifting capacity of patients with CLBP worsens before therapy. However, the lifting capacity of CLBP patients showed a marked improvement during multimodal therapy, as well as a decrease in pain intensity. The lifting capacity of the patients who returned to work one year after therapy was not different to that of healthy subjects, although they still reported some pain. This review shows that multimodal therapy has a positive effect on the lifting capacity of patients with CLBP, and that lifting capacity is an important part of functional restoration.
