Abstract

This article summarizes the current state of the literature with respect to benefits of aerobic exercise training in HIV-positive individuals. The effects of exercise on immune indices, quality of life, and aerobic parameters are explored, as well as the optimal training intensity. The results of several prior exercise training studies will be reviewed and future research directions discussed. The role of passive resistance training in AIDS patients with weight loss is reviewed. Finally, the importance of exercise in mitigating the metabolic complications of highly active antiretroviral therapy is detailed along with the current practice guidelines from the AIDS clinical trials group.
