Abstract

Exercise training augments the recovery of functional capacity in patients with cardiovascular disease. Exercise prescription is based on using relatively higher-intensity exercise, which entails some risk, to achieve optimal benefits from exercise. In this regard, prescribing exercise follows the same general principles as the prescription of pharmacologic agents, balancing effects and side effects. Exercise prescription is ideally based on the results of graded exercise testing, although subjective markers such as the rating of perceived exertion or the talk test can be very effective for many patients. Techniques for monitoring exercise training might not only improve the safety of exercise training but also contribute to better compliance with the prescribed program.
