Objective: To provide an introduction to the various imaging modalities and image guided therapies pertinent to hip and groin injuries in sportsmen and women.
Data sources: MEDLINE search of imaging techniques for common pelvic and hip injuries.
Study selection and data extraction: The majority of the selected papers was from established radiology or sports science / orthopaedic journals and specifically related to sporting injuries.
Conclusions: Imaging can be a powerful tool in unravelling diagnostically challenging hip, groin and pelvic complaints in sportsmen and women but each investigation has to be targeted at answering a specific question to avoid missing important diagnoses and to prevent unnecessary treatment of "pathological" radiographic findings entirely unrelated to the patient's symptoms.
