Abstract

The Navy, as part of the SANDF, has a role in defending the sovereignty of the State, i.e. to protect South Africa against aggression from outside its borders. That is the Navy's primary role - to fight at sea. All other roles, such as sea-fishery protection, search and rescue, combating piracy, smuggling and pollution, as well as diplomacy, are classified as "assistance to other departments" and are secondary functions.
