Abstract

News that Sumo-sized Japanese telecoms firm Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), was looking to gobble up South Africa's own global IT player Dimension Data, wasn't too much of surprise to those who follow the once euphemistically termed Dire Data. The company that has its roots in Johannesburg's West Rand suburbs was looking East years ago to secure its future after recovering from the precipice that was the tech bubble of the late 1990's. Didata's stock, which once traded in the R100 region, spectacularly crashed to lows of around R2 shortly after the bubble burst. Just to illustrate how far the company has transformed since those dark days, the offer from NTT values Didata at almost R24bn currently.
