Abstract

Under s54(1) of the Mine Health and Safety Act(29 of 1996 (MHSA)) inspectors of mines have very wide powers to issue instructions necessary to protect the health and safety of mining employees where dangerous occurrences, practices or conditions at mines warrant this. These powers include the immediate halting of mining operations.
