Historically, there were often battles for traditional leadership in tribal communities on the African Continent and elsewhere. In Umdeni (Clan) of Amantungwa and Others v The MEC for Housing and Traditional Affairs, KwaZulu-Natal (513-09)  ZASCA 142 (23 November 2010), the Supreme Court of Appeal had to make a ruling in a battle for the position of Chief of the Amantungwa Tribal Community (the Amantungwa), in KwaZulu-Natal.
