The San people have been using Hoodia, an indigenous appetite suppressing plant during their long and gruelling hunting expeditions in adverse climatic conditions, where food and water scarcity were common, ever since they could remember. Its use was formally recorded for the first time in 1796 by botanist Francis Masson.
