The Labour Relations Act (66 of 1995) (LRA) currently does not define what constitutes a fixed term contract. Nor does it contain any provisions which regulate the use of fixed term contracts, other than s186(1)(b) which provides that the termination of a fixed term contract of employment, in circumstances in which the employee has a legitimate expectation of renewal or extension, may amount to an unfair dismissal.
