The details are a little hazy, but the facts are broadly correct. Around 1962 the South African government (and here the name Blaar Coetzee, at that time the Deputy Minister of Bantu Administration and Development, rates especial dishonourable mention) announced that by 1972 the net inflow of black people to the cities in South Africa would cease and the reverse flow would commence. By some date in the future, let's say 1984 for argument's sake, South Africa's cities would be populated only by white people.
Wits Gold, the junior mining company spearheaded by Harmony Gold old boy, Phillip Kotze, first appeared in these pages with news of the potential acquisition of Harmony's aging Evander operation (without prejudice March 2012, Vol 12 No 2). That transaction had the potential to transform radically the mining junior from an explorer into a producer. Two months after the article appeared the deal collapsed in a heap, having failed to meet certain of its conditions precedent and, as it stands, Wits Gold is yet to mine an ounce of anything.
