Abstract

Hemel-en-Aarde, the wine region just outside Hermanus has a maritime climate, cooler than most other wine producing areas in South Africa. This cool maritime influence is perfect for growing great grapes and the area is well-known for producing superior Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, but not for Cabernet Sauvignon, the king of grapes - a variety often associated with 'older' and warmer regions such as Stellenbosch. But things are changing. Producers are planting more varieties in cool climate areas and boutique wineries, giving proper hands-on attention to grape growing and fine wine making, are increasing.
