Noble rot is a benevolent form of rot in which the botrytis fungus attacks ripe undamaged white grapes. This fungus requires the right weather conditions with the humidity of early morning mist, followed by warm sunny afternoons. The fungus spreads from grape to grape, penetrating the skin and turning the grapes into a dehydrated state in which they shrivel into an often disgusting-appearing, brown raisinlike form, covered with a fine grey-looking powder.
