Investing in property has always been one of the preferred methods to secure a passive stream of income in the form of rental income, while generally enjoying steady long-term capital growth. It is no surprise then that Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), with roots in the United States of America in the early 1960s, have become popular. It is also no surprise that South Africa has finally jumped on the bandwagon and introduced specific legislation to cater for REITs, both from a regulatory and tax perspective.
