The recent public service strike has brought the issue of secondary strikes or "sympathy" strikes into focus, with COSATU calling on its affiliated unions to encourage members to engage in industrial action in support of the demands being made by public sector unions. While these strikes have largely not materialised, despite COSATU's threats to the contrary, the potential consequences have threatened to be far-reaching and to affect industries as diverse as mining and manufacturing which would appear to be completely unrelated to government and the demands being made by public sector employees.
