Regulation of hedge funds is both a thorny issue and a substantial challenge to regulators because the activities pursued under their guise are so diverse that it is extremely difficult to contain them within the scope of an acceptable definition. Given that formal regulation amounts to recognition and can even be construed as tacit endorsement, it is understandable that regulators worldwide have proceeded with great caution.
