The main reason for reducing agreements to writing is to achieve certainty. It is arguable whether the use by legal practitioners in drafting agreements of phrases like "reasonable endeavours" and "best endeavours" achieves any certainty or whether the contracting parties appreciate the obligations they assume when they "endeavour" to do something.
