In March 2007, the Competition Tribunal handed down its finding that dominant steel producer Mittal Steel South Africa had contravened s8(a) of the Competition Act by charging excessive prices for flat steel in the local market, to the detriment of consumers. The Tribunal postponed its decision on the remedies to be imposed, however, to enable the parties to make submissions on the appropriateness of any administrative penalty to be imposed. These submissions were heard by the Tribunal in July.
