Abstract

Slaughterhouses (or 'abattoirs' as they are more commonly known in South Africa), are one of the arenas in which animals are often cruelly, if not despicably, treated on a daily basis. Many animal activist and animal anti-cruelty supporters argue that, just as human beings have rights to protect them against violence and torture, so the same should apply to animals as fellow inhabitants of planet earth. And it seems that many lawyers in the burgeoning field of animal law agree.
