The subject of legal pro bono work in this country is a topic rightly attracting increasing attention. The Cape Law Society requires its practising members to perform 24 hours of pro bono work each year. The scorecard of the draft Legal Services Sector Charter provides for the performance by attorneys of 24 hours of pro bono work per year or the performance of pro bono work in terms of the relevant statutory law society programme. And now the Law Society of the Northern Provinces is headed towards introducing a compulsory pro bono scheme for its practising members.
